I don't believe you can use it that way...
I think, first you have to establish a vpn-connection to your router. Then you can use UVNC like from your network.

In the viewer, go to options, select your desired scale, OK
Then select "Save connection settings as default" - that's it

I switched back to 1.0.9.6.2. First it didn't change anything. Then i deinstalled on the "watched" computer, removed all remaining registry-entries containing ultravnc and uvnc, reinstalled 1.0.9.6.2 an then it worked.

Using the autoscale option works fine, if you connect to a pc having a larger resolution than the own pc. Connecting to a pc with a lower resolution results in a magnification (i.e. 106%) which is hard to read.
An option downscale would be nice: Downscale larger resolutions to fit but not blowing up ...
