Currently the Opteron 1xx series is actually cheaper than the athlon64 series. Either way you'll end up with a good machine. I guess the price heavily depends on where you are on earth *g*

However, an Opteron system with e.g. 2 dualcore Opterons (hope the series you mentioned has this ability ...

I don't have a copy of MSVC and I don't suppose it compiles under mingw...

BTW, just the Itanium has a different compiler. The new P4s with 64 bit extensions run the same code as the Athlon64..
Itanium doesn't even work on x64, it needs an IA64(which Itanium uses) build.

I would also be VERY interested in a 64-bit (x64) driver. We use UltraVNC alot for our maya rendering farm and are moving to x64 on the windows platform. Remote Desktop is out of the question since maya won't render when logged in as a remote desktop user.
