Meanwhile I was able to resolve this issue by opening a few ports in the firewall. Apparently these ports are needed so the server and viewer can connect to an access server.
I can now 'Setup P2P' and use the 'Open Desktop' module -- as long as the server and viewer are both in the same LAN ...
