[Update: Collaboration Mode bug, I think?] Weird icon overlay on Windows when connected from two clients

Post by bitoclass »

I have a Windows 10 media PC with UltraVNC server running on it, and use VNC as the main way I control it, so it's frequently left connected from both my laptop and my phone.

Since a recent update - I have 1.3.6 now but I think this started with the previous update - I keep seeing the strange blue shape shown in the picture linked below, in the very top-left corner of the screen, on the server computer's monitor as well as through all VNC clients.

(That's a screenshot of the top-left corner of my client PC's UltraVNC Viewer window, and the shape I'm talking about is the one that's a bit like a link activation hand from a browser, just to the left of the back arrow in the running app on the server PC.)

From a bit of experimentation I'm finding that it may only appear when two clients are connected at once - but as I say this is a very common scenario and has been for years without previously exhibiting this issue. I'm seeing it most of the time now!

The weird shape/icon is always on top of everything else and I can't find any way to make it go away while two clients are connected, so it'll burn into my screen at this rate...

Anyone have any idea what could be behind this and whether there's anything I can do to stop it? Or is this a bug that can be looked into by the UltraVNC developers ahead of the next release?

Thanks very much!

Possibly relevant details:
- Server PC: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit 21H2 update, UltraVNC server 1.3.6
- Client 1: Android 11 phone, same issue with both apps I have, namely VNC Viewer and MultiVNC
- Client 2: Windows 11 PC, UltraVNC viewer 1.3.6
Let me know if you need any other info!

Update: I've just found this post:

viewtopic.php?p=109560#p109560

which appears to show a whole load of these hands, but I don't really understand what I can do to disable this Collaboration mode, which I do not want or need. I simply want this hand icon to go away and never appear in any situation - is there a setting I can change somewhere to achieve this?

Thanks very much!

Further update: if I turn Collaboration on in winvnc.ini (Collabo=1 instead of 0), I can see how this feature is meant to work. I can see it could be useful. The blue hands move around etc.

But I have Collaboration turned off (Collabo=0) and do not need this feature - so I think if Collabo=0 the system should just never draw the hands and perhaps this is a bug that can be addressed please?

Thanks for any help you can offer!
