One computer gets infinite windows on Connection attempt

Post by rsutton »

I am running a fully up to date ultravnc server on windows 10 (also fully up to date) version 1.4.3.6 . I have all kinds of machines connecting to this server. I have Windows 11 machines, and various linux machines. All work just fine: except one Windows 11 Lenovo IdeaPad machine.

On that Win 11 machine, when I attempt a connection I get infinite rolling screens displayed that never stop. I have completely scrubbed the Ultravnc software on that machine and re-downloaded a fresh version of 1.4.3.6 to no avail. It has to be something simple but I am tearing my hair out. This is NOT due to the current version, it's been going on for a couple of releases. I keep thinking that I can figure it out, but I can't. I can use Windows RDP when I'm on my local lan, but that doesn't help me when I'm traveling. All 4 of my other Windows 11 machines work perfectly. I am writing this on a nearly identical Lenovo laptop that runs perfectly.

Can someone offer some advice or solve my problem? I am getting desperate...

I assure you I am trying to connect from a laptop to a lan server. Two totally different ip addresses.

I am embarrassed to tell you that three computers are involved. I just assumed that everyone these days did it the way I do. On my remote lan server (linux), I have one port open to the outside world: an ssh port. On my laptop (local Win 11), I use Putty and have the address set to the external ip address. I have a local tunnel setup as follows L5900 192.168.1.123 (the local lan address to the Windows 10 machine that I'm trying to connect to).

Here's how I use it:
1) I use putty on the laptop to login to the remote ssh server which has the above tunnel pointing to the actual Win11 machine on the remote local lan. By the way, I use a certificate to sign into the remote ssh server.

2) I then use ultravnc (v 1.4.3.6) and type in localhost:5900

3) I get the vnc password request and enter it.

4) I get the remote Win 10 screen but I immediately get infinite rolling windows.

This procedure works for all my other laptops, but not this one. I'm really sorry that I didn't give you the whole story (if it turns out to be significant), but I thought that everyone uses ssh to provide encrypted tunnels to their hosts! I've been using this technique since before 2008 and never had a problem. Only this one laptop doesn't place nice.

Oh man, this has got to be something simple. I'm sure someone has run into this situation, before. I surely can't be the first person to encounter this. I have already done an sfc scan and a Windows refresh. That should only leave a video driver and it's the latest from Lenovo.

I'm really stuck...
