Making a Virtual VGA driver with VNC.

It just occured this afternoon that it would be very handy for embedded computers without a VGA adapter to actually have one. With an embedded computer, a VNC monitor might actually be desirable. Has anyone done a verson if VNC that will act like a monitor? I'm guessing VNC server wouldn't work on a system without an actual video card.

I think it is a very attractive feature to have a dummy display driver to fake windows xp to be run in multi-monitor mode. Many users have imagined using such feature to use multiple clients to simulate a multimonitor system remote session on a single monitor PC.

Have anyone heard Maxivista before? It uses a client PC's monitor to extend the desktop of a host. For example, you have a notebook and a desktop, the notebook monitor can be used as the secondary display of your desktop. All the data are sent through network and NO PHYSICAL CONNECTION between your desktop and laptop is required except network cable.

However, maxivista is not free (well, I have purchased several weeks before). It needs many TCP/UDP ports for both client and server which leads to complicated firewall/NAT configuration. The ports can't be changed and there is no reverse connection. These limitation cripples Maxivista mobility.

Ultr@VNC has no such limitation. All the VNC-related features like NAT2NAT, SC, encryption and repeater own the edge on Maxivista. Importantly, according to my experience, VNC outperforms Maxivista based on responsiveness and accrancy under the same network condition! After a long long tiem evolution, thanks to all developers, Ultr@VNC eventually supports multiple monitor system! Now all we need is a dummy video driver. I think such driver is already exist on the network, we just haven't found it out yet. If anyone know where we can download such a driver, please kindly post a link here. All the VNC community will be benetfit by unleashing the VNC potential!

i am looking for the same thing: a way to do what maxivista does, and send the screen to a viewer on mac osx without running virtual pc, so through vnc is best. i use synergy now to share the km, i'd like a viewing window where i can drag things from my pc screen.

it says it should work on windows xp, but so far no luck. i installed on a tc1100 tabletpc (xp pro) with one etended desktop (two screens) already, by placing the files in a folder and running the .exe. on reboot, the system shows the monitor where it should be in system properties (second of three), but when i try to enable the monitor, the OS responds that the driver was written for an earlier verion of windows.

Any ideas?

It seems that the developers of this virtual driver ani't active anymore. The driver log in the CVS shows that the last update is over 12 months ago. The link provided isn't work anymore and I have failed to google it (based on the words "attic" and "driver"). Could anyone know other source of such virtual driver?

I have found an app that does similar concept, but for me, its slower than the VNC.

BUT: there is a virtual VGA driver that you can use with VNC also! Moreover, it also works for my x64 Windows. I am now using a third display redirected to the laptop via that driver and UltraVNC with installed video hook drivers. I managed to set it up so they connect almost automatically. The only problem is that UltraVNC crashes when secondary montors have greater resolution than the primary one. Hope sometime it will be fixed.

I've tried ZoneScreen, but it's slow, and the author suggests that I try VNC solutions instead. Problem is there is no real VNC solution from what I can tell. There's Maxivista but it's a commercial app and not free.

I have been searching and searching and searching for something along the lines of Maxivista, but without the limitations of even the commercial license (I'm not just being a cheapskate here, although that is part of my motivation), that I can accomplish using VNC (or anything similar).

ZoneOS can give me virtual monitors. However it's display on other PCs is kind of slow. Even the author says so. He recommends using a VNC client. The problem is, even he hasn't used it like that, nor does he even know (or so he says) how to implement using a VNC client in such a manner.

I've been looking for multiple monitor support in VNC clients, and they all support it now, inasmuch as they will display ALL of the monitors.

That leaves the final, important question: how can you dial in to just ONE monitor of several?
