Linux VNC viewer, server & repeater development

Linux VNC viewer, server & repeater development

Post by thedarkener »

I guess this would be one of the best places to ask this question.

I own a technical consulting/support company, and use SC, the Linux repeater (v014) and the Windows viewer under Wine (on Ubuntu Feisty) for supporting my clients.

Issue #1:
Usually, after about 10 minutes of a remote session, my UVNC viewer (again, under Wine on Ubuntu) starts going haywire - lots of screen corruption, can't see anything anymore, and that viewer "ribbon bar" (imitates the rdesktop one?) seems to freak out. I have to disconnect and reconnect (always having to call the client back to reconnect me). I don't know what the issue is with that, but I think it might have something to do with that ribbon bar trying to hide itself (it is always outside of the wine viewer window, right under my Gnome top panel).

Is there a way to disable that bar to troubleshoot?

Issue #2:
I really, really want to get UVNC SC/ID# support in the Linux native VNC client (tsclient GUI integration would be great, too). I want to PAY someone to add this support, and to merge it with the Linux VNC viewer package, keeping it open source. If anyone wants to be a part of this, please message me. Again, I am willing to pay for someone to be able to add this functionality, so I don't have to use the Windows viewer and Wine under Linux to support my clients anymore. It's too buggy for me.

Looking forward to any responses!!

Would love to help you in this quest, but im not a coder (i wish), but i thought i might be able to help, even if it is in only a small way.

This is one thing that i can help with ...
if you look at [topic=9772][/topic] you will find the way i use to allow reconnection of VNC, also connects via ssh tunnel, for a bit more security and helps with transversing most firewalls ...

Also, i use the default TightVNC viewer from suse linux as my viewer, it doesnt have the funky features of UVNC, but it is rock solid with SC.

If you are interested in the latest source, give me a msg, and i can update the post. I havent touched the code in around 6 months, it just works.

Okay,
I fixed my problem by using another VNC Software: TightVNC.
It works perfectly under Linux with a native Viewer.

You can make packages here:
http://www.vncscan.com/vs/download.htm
OneClickVNC that uses TightVNC (1.0.1.1)

It worked fine for me. No more disconnects, etc.

How does this OneClick/TightVNC support multiple connections (like UVNC does with ID numbers)? Does it support repeaters, etc? I didn't know the TightVNC client for Linux supported anything like that.

This would be a more of a feature request as well being that some users may wish to uvnc into linux boxes...:D

Multiple repeaters: No
Connection IDs:No

Very simple. One package, one connection.
On the other side just start
"xtightvncviewer -listen"

works for me :)
(but slower than uvnc)

Definitively.
Not only the Java viewer, but also the many ported viewers and the compatibility between them is one of the great things about VNC.
