Please verify 1.1.8x64 EXE has no virus

Post by w3w3 »

Hi,

When I go to download 1.1.8.0 x64 bit EXE version of UltraVNC, Microsoft' s Security Essentials blocks it, identifying it as containing a potential threat but the zip version is not flagged.

This is my sequence of pages/links...
http://www.uvnc.com/downloads/ultravnc.html
http://www.uvnc.com/downloads/ultravnc/ ... -1100.html
Then clicking on the red download next to the text: setup x64 v1180 GNU/GPL 2012-11-27 Windows 3.6 MB 175148
I get ...
http://www.uvnc.com/component/jdownload ... /4/54.html
At the bottom of the page is identified: setup x64 v1180 1.1.8.0 License: GNU/GPL Size: 3.6 MB
After clicking the accept box, I click on the download button below it.

At this point, I get a pop up that asks permission to download the file, "UltraVNC_1_1_8_X64_Setup.exe (352 MB) from http://www.uvnc.eu
AND almost immediately, I also get a Microsoft's Security Essential Alert popup saying, "RemoteAccess:Win32/UltraVNC", Alert level=Medium" and asks me for a response.

I might think, well maybe this could be a reasonable report and I could accept it ...
BUT
I downloaded the zip version of the same code and successfully installed it on two computers.
The zip version gives me no security report. So I am puzzled.

Can someone verify whether or not the .exe version has been compromised in some way or it is safe?

Thanks

When you install a setup.exe, it's always installed with a higher elevation mode then a file in a zip archive.
The setup can install files in secure folders like "program files", using a zip you only can extract them to your own folders,
installing them in program files require UAC elevations.

The MS defender correct detect that our software is ultravnc.
RemoteAccess:Win32/UltraVNC", Alert level=Medium"
You should be aware that you are installing a "RemoteAccess software" and if this is installed as part of some cracked game
someone else could use it to try to gain some access to your system.

That's all.
