dum blond needs help

Post by blondgirl »

Hi all
I bet this has been ask a hundred times and yes I have done a search for it but found nothing

Here is my problem

I have followed step by step and attempted to create my server. When I press the 'create server' button I get the error "failed to Set dynalias" I press 'ok'. Then it says "failed to find external IP address"

Things I have done

1..took my linksy rounter out

2..Uninstalled any fire walls

3 Connected my Virgen modem straight to my computer.

I see that I must have ports open ( I think 5500 ) BUT if I have no router or fire walls how can these be blocked.

Hope some one can help me as I'm going nuts

Thank you Blondie

Blondie:

Just went back to review the problem. Actually, it is NOT a problem. So long as you enter ONLY the alias, pw, and listen port 5500 and uncheck upnp, you WILL get that error then after a long pause you will get a block with garbage characters in it. Simply erase them and put in the correct IP address you got from your ISP (use whatismyip.com if unknown). Then say OK to all that follows and the result will be the correct client server file in the server directory with the subdir name you used as an alias. Works fine for me after that.

Hi Robert
Thank you so much for getting back to me.
I was giving up hope on this as well over 50 people had looked at the post and no one came back with a answer.

so it looks like a bug in the program then?
I have done what you say and put in the IP address.
I presume I have to put in the one behind the router and NOT the main ip?
I will run this and let you know how I get on.

Have you customized your pages?

Once again thank you very much for getting back to me.

Just FYI, blondgirl, many of us gave up on UltraVNC SC a while back and started using SCPrompt and ChunkVNC and other spin-offs instead, so it's difficult for us to offer any advice.

Oh so why was that then? is there some thing I should know?

I a bit confused (thats not hard to do ) is PcHelpware the same program as
UltraVNC then ?

It is a shame as I have now got it to work as per Robert (hollrm)

I have not tested it on a live contact as yet.

I do like it because I can customize it how I like it.

So if there is some thing wrong with the program like unsafe then what would you suggest I dum blode like me could use.

Many thanks

Personally, I never really got UltraVNC SC to work well for me; it was very flaky in my testing. But this was years ago.

There are many different programs:

UltraVNC

This is the full "client/server" package that includes a server and viewer (client) component. It usually gets installed like any Windows program, adds itself to the Start menu, etc.

UltraVNC SC

This is the "Single Click" miniature edition of UltraVNC, intended to help a more technical person run his or her machine as the "listening viewer" and have others connect back to him or her. The SC server is a single executable file that cleans up its temp files when the remote control session is over.

PCHelpware

This is an earlier attempt to add ease of use to the VNC process, intended for Help Desks. I think most of it is closed source. I believe it was started by the UltraVNC developers as a commercial project. I just do not know whether it is still actively developed or supported?

SCPrompt

This is an attempt to allow roll-your-own versions of UltraVNC SC without the need to have the remote UltraVNC web site generate the SC package. It's pretty full featured.

ChunkVNC

This is similar to SCPrompt and UltraVNC SC with a heavy emphasis on using a fixed-position UltraVNC "repeater" to allow free roaming of both client and servers.

SCPrompt is especially customizable, and there are ways of modifying ChunkVNC to your liking as well, including at least two forks of the project.
