UltraVNC - Free Teamviewer?

Post by silekonn »

Hello,

This is to find a better remote application. I currently use TeamViewer QuickSupport for checks/fixes but I would prefer not to continue spending on their product. Can someone recommend a replacement? Is UltraVNC with SingleClick III suitable (for 64-bit Microsoft systems with UAC enabled)?

Thank you,

silekonn

You can use LogMeIn Free for an unlimited number of workstations. It's easier to use than VNC.

For ad-hoc connections from multiple clients, if you're willing to run a repeater, ChunkVNC is great. UltraVNC SC will do the job as well.

Hello,

The viewer (support) would always be the same DMZ'd system. The best part of Teamviewer is the ease of the QuickSupport executable. I do appreciate the ability to answer UAC prompts, file transfer, and a big item is remote reboot to safe mode. Auto update is a big request but would be a cool feature.

Do those recommendations do some of these things?

Thank you,

I'm gathering that you're sending the QuickSupport executable to various different clients who you are supporting remotely.

Yes, the ChunkVNC package will work very much like that (it calls its executable InstantSupport). You do have to run a repeater, but you can run it on your DMZd viewer machine.

Or you could use SCPrompt in the same way, with or WITHOUT the repeater (just forward the listening viewer port directly to your fixed viewer).

The ONLY thing that might be missing is the Safe Mode support, but I think that's in the works (it's not very difficult from what I understand; I was shocked how poorly Windows protects its Safe Mode).

Still, however, a combination of free services such as LogMeInFree and join.me might be all you ever really need, and they're easier to deal with than VNC.
