1.0.9.6.2 weirdness with really slow initial screen draws

Post by rcooke »

This might be related to another post where the initial screen nevers displays - you just get a solid colour window.

I have 50 or so machines, most use the FreeBSD repeater, some have local port forwards as well. (for when the auto reconnect fails I can remotely restart the service)

A few weeks ago, they all worked perfect. I could connect to any machine from any of my 4 usual work locations. Now, I have a problem connecting via the repeater to remote machines.

The connection establishes normally. But then I get the big, solid colour screen. I hit the connection info icon, and I can see data trickling in. Normally, the initial screen loads up (20-50K?) in a few seconds. Now, I watch the "Rx" data go up a few K at a time. Then it starts to pause every 4K-6K. If I let it go a few minutes, it will creep up to around 12-15K then stop. A little later the connection terminates. I grabbed the console log (before it terminated):

I have two workstations at this location (my home actually) one XP PRo machine and one WIN 7 PRO 64-bit machine. Both exibit the SAME behaviour trying to connect to the same two remote machines via the repeater. They can connect to each other direct no problem. Butthe Win 7 one has the same problem with the XP one via the repeater.

When I go to the office, from my Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit machine (which is one of the 2 I'm trying to connect to) I have no trouble connecting to any other machine - including my 2 at home. I can connect to the WIN 7 home machine direct and my XP machine via the repeater. Both work normally.

And I can connect to my desktop from a co-workers' WIN 7 Ultimate 64 bit machine. I think he had no trouble connecting to my direct machine either. And he has no trouble connecting to the remote machine I couldn't get from home via the repeater (an offsite client machine).

I have been searching for "what changed" before this started. Nothing really stands out. The usual MS updates. I started using a VOIP phone at home (which I unplugged for a test to make sure it was not throttling bandwidth).

Doing an http://speedtest.net shows I'm getting near my max speed up and down (5M/800K). I did an FTP test with a machine on the work network, and I got near my max speed up and down - just in case there was a flaky router. (although a flaky router on the work network would not affect my attempt at the client's remote machine from home, but I thought it was worth checking

I'm looking for ideas! An after-thought: Two of the problem machines have really large wide screens attached - a lot of data. At least I used a solid colour background, but still, lots of icons.... Mind you, the offiste client machine has always been a widescreen and used to work just fine. hm. Although now, they keep a security camera display on it, so lots of moving pixels.

If anybody can tell me how to use the encryption plugin on my MAC I would have a 3rd machine at home to try!

Richard Cooke
