Hello Rudi

This new version doesn't run on XP SP3 Computers : error "Vncviewer.exe is not a valid Win32 application".

I controlled on XP with older versions : it's OK with version 1.2.4.0 but version 1.2.5.1 and above will not start on XP SP3 with this error "Not a valid application".

Can you correct this ?

Thanks a lot

This is not a simple
All changes are for win10 and old compilers doesn't support the new winsows10 functions.
Server is a no go for XP, for the server you need to use the old version.

We will try to build a XP compatible viewer (1.3.2)

Hello

unfortunately I got a new error message :
The entry point of the procedure 'WakeAllConditionVariable' could not be found in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL

In our PC environment we use about 250 Win XP, the rest is mainly Win7 et Win10 (600 more !).
Would be fine if the new viewer could work...

Thanks

Re-uploaded the zip file.
Testen on some old VM and at least it open.
Some functions are disabled
* touchscreen
* XZ compressors.
* The Zstd comrpessor dosn't work in multithread mode, possible you need to disable
[v] use zstd instead of zlib as zlib could be faster without threading.

Please let me know that this works, then i can add it do the web download page.
The download counter should give me a clue about how mant people still using XP :)

Hello Rudi

Well done, this new version of viewer works on XP, no matter if the [v] use zstd instead of zlib is checked or not :-)

Can I use the next version of Setup (x86) to install the server on XP computers or must I remain with the v1.2.4.0 version for the server install ?
Is the installation of the video-driver included in the Setup on XP ?

Thanks a lot for your job.

The server gonna be to hard, and all changes are not working on XP.
1.3.2 ultravnc server does not support XP, you need to use 1.2.4.
1.3.2 Special build, support XP and will be distributed as zip, no installer.

I have just tried to install this new version on Windows 10 20H2, and it didn't work well:
1. Installation got stuck at driver installation... I had to kill the winvnc -driverinstall process, and the installation seemingly continued...
2. Now when I run the Server, I get the "Benchmark" window that doesn't do anything... I open settings - Benchmark window opens... I click DSMPlugin settings - Benchmark window opens... I cannot do anything...
3. Later I notice that system service cannot run...

Tried clean installation with the same results...

Installed the included certificate to Trusted and managed to install the monitor driver manually... Now installation goes through driver installation, but the program doesn't work, showing this "Benchmark" window for every action...

Reverted back to 1.2.4

The installer needs to be updated too... Not sure if driver and service installation fails because wrong files are in the installer package or some other reason...

I had to kill the installation process again because both winvnc -installdriver and winvnc -install got stuck...
After I replaced the files I had to open cmd and do everything manually
winvnc -uninstall
winvnc -installdriver (Windows 10 driver installation confirmation appeared)
winvnc -install

Small bug:
After installation, the default logging path is "C:\Users\rudi\Desktop\UltraVNC_INSTALLER_OTHER\installer64" :D

The installer should be able to install the drivers and service.
For a day there was a version online with wrong winvnc.exe in the installer, not the zip files.
"This version opens a benchmark page and ignore command options"

Retested installer and all seems fine on my system.
The only thing i can think of is that the bad winvnc.exe was lcoked, and the installer could not replace the files.
The installer is ok, was tested with multiple persors before release
Tested 64 and 32 bit.

Dit you used the setup from

Installer works fine now... Thanks...

Instantly encountered a reproducible bug:
Windows 10 20H2 x64... Both Viewer and Server are version 1.3.2, using SecureVNCPlugin64...
After connecting, open some sort of video on the remote machine to put a load on the encoder (e.g. I have a video background in Opera)... Tried with Ultra2 and Hextile with similar effects...
Open chat
Close chat on the local machine

In 4 attempts out of 5, the picture freezes, but mouse movements and clicks still go through to the remote machine... Sometimes weird colored blocks appear where I move the mouse... Refresh screen button does nothing... File transfer gets stuck on Connecting...

If there is no active movement on screen, opening and closing chat is fine... So, it's either network-related, or encoding-related...
Closing chat on the remote machine also seems to be fine even with full-screen video playing...
Edit: Closing chat on the remote machine also breaks screen transmission, just less often...

Let's check if i can repeat it, looks like a timing issue.

bug description:
  • Opening chat while playing a video then close chat

Current behaviour: screen refresh stop, or broken jpeg colors.

Wanted behaviour: video and chat can be openen and closed while playing a video

I noticed similar potential trigger when opening the file transfer window. After closing the file transfer window sometimes I see the screen to be frozen. Changing encoder often helps to resolve.
Still switching to RLE encoders requires to disable zstd and using gzip as zstd leads to disconnects.

For me those are minor issues as I know work-arounds (disable zstd, use different encoder).

The chat issue is something from a while ago.
We replaced some functions with a secure one, but there was a mistake in a size of the buffer.
After calling it, something can crash...

Please crosscheck if this fix it.

No... Instantly freezes...
Using Ultra2 encoding and SecureVNCPlugin64.dsm
Also tried Zlib and ZRLE with zstd and zlib, Preemptive Updates on/off
Also, changing option doesn't reset the screen after it's been frozen

Yes... Both are 1.3.2...

Additional info:
If I connect to an older (Core2Duo E6550 from 13 years ago) PC that struggles a bit with encoding a lot of movement on screen, closing chat freezes the screen almost always...
Right now I tried the same with a very high-performance PC at home, using the original VNCViewer, and it took me 12 attempts to freeze the screen... Most of the time closing chat was fine...

Bug is server performance related... I will try to lower MaxCPU later tonight... It is set to 100% now...
On my high-performance PC, after lowering MaxCPU to 50%, it took me 5 chat closings to freeze the picture... :(

Maybe this can help?..
If picture freezes, then when you close connection you get

Code: Select all

c:\users\rudi\desktop\git_ultravnc\winvnc\winvnc\vsocket.cpp : socket error 1: 10054
--Удаленный хост принудительно разорвал существующее подключение.
If picture does not freeze I get the normal line when closing connection:

Code: Select all

c:\users\rudi\desktop\git_ultravnc\winvnc\winvnc\vsocket.cpp : zero bytes read1

Seems to be working quite well now... Tested it on a slow machine via a Loopback connection under a 100% CPU utilization (was failing in this mode yesterday when I tested)...
I'll test it again over the Internet later tonight when I get home... Just to be sure...

Update: Unless someone finds another edge case, let's call this bug fixed...
