special characters not transferred/displayed

Post by blaas »

Hi,

for many years I successfully used a very old licensed copy of RealVNC server on my Win7 box to access it from remote. Recently, it started behaving strangely (e.g. ignoring clicks on pull-down menus) and I decided to switch to the latest version of UltraVNC. Everything works fine except from several special characters not being transmitted to various but not all programs. For example, ~,|,@,[,],},{' are all not displayed in Word, Wordpad, in an Xwindow of cygwin, and maybe several others. In contrast, they are all shown correctly in Thunderbird that I am using right now to write this mail. They are also shown correctly within a (non-graphical) cygwin terminal and a windows command window. Under certain conditions of copying a square is shown in front of the given special character.

I had this UltraVNC (and TurboVNC) problem already many years ago (this is why I finally used the fully functional RealVNC) and hoped the problem would be absent from the last version of UltraVNC, however unfortunately it is not. I observe this behavior not only in Win7 but also in Win10. It is also independent from the viewer (RealVNC or TurboVNC or UltraVNC).

This is extremely annoying as my only current solution is to type the concerned characters within e.g. Thunderbird and copy/paste them into e.g. Word. Please note that I use a German keyboard, which requires to enter the above special characters by simultaneously pressing <alt gr> and the special character displayed on the lower right of the key, e.g.~ on key */+, or @ on key Q/q.
Also note that Anydesk and, originally, RealVNC work/worked as expected!
Many thanks for any help!

Dieter

Hi,

I have the same problem as Dieter and I am also using a German keyboard layout.
I remember that it used to work in older versions but I'm not quite sure.

Thank you and regards
Arno
