Hi,
I am trying to get PCHelpWare to work.
On my internal LAN, using my own repeater, it works beautifully - even between 2 Vista boxes.
However, for some reason, it does not work for me on the internet. I am quite sure I know how to set up my firewall - when I forward ICMP to that computer (the repeater), I can ping it, when I disable the ICMP port forwarding, I can't ping it from the outside world. The same with RemoteDesktop - I can port forward port 3389, and Remote Desktop to this computer works over the internet, when I stop the port forwarding, it no longer works over the internet. So, I have set up port forwarding of the server and viewer ports on my firewall. I am using the default ports - 5901 and 5500. I figure if everything is encrypted, there is no sense/very little to gain by trying to hide behind a weird port number.
When I start the server, I get a little box where I can't read the error message, because the box is too small. I can't resize it. There is an error, but I can't see what it says. I tried Ctrl-C, no luck. Is there a way to make that box a little bigger, so I can see what my next troubleshooting step should be?
The viewer just sits there waiting, all by its lonely self . When I have the repeater running, I can see from the log that the repeater sees the viewer. BTW, when using the repeater as a service, is there a way to see the log? I don't have any icon in the system tray when I run it as a service.

PCHW not working on WAN
Re: PCHW not working on WAN
What is the "small box" you saw? Did it show the title?
So far I know the PHW server will only pop up a small windows of "PcHelpware Info Rel 1.0.0" which displaying the connection status (any error message will be displayed in this box as well). But even it is not a big one, it is sufficient to show most of the content.
If the samll box you saw is not this one, then this may be somthing else from a firewall/anti-spyware.
Have you tried to run the server at another station?

Re: PCHW not working on WAN
OK. Did some more testing. It actually works !! (Well, sort of) Yay!
Now I guess I need to do some fine-tuning.
What I did to make it work was to stop the repeater "service", and ran the repeater manually by double-clicking on the repeater's .exe file. When I did that, the server was able to make a connection.
Now, the problem is, if I (or anyone else) log off the computer that hosts the repeater, that program (repeater) will automatically stop. This is why I originally tried to set up the repeater as a service. My question now is, how do I get the repeater to be a (Windows) service, but still take the same settings as if it was started manually? What am I missing here?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.

After have all setting correctly saved in application mode (i.e. maunally started the repeater), then run it in service mode again.caffiend wrote:how do I get the repeater to be a (Windows) service, but still take the same settings as if it was started manually?
