No tray icon with 1.0.4 RC8 and Vista Ultimate

I have been managing my father's computer remotely on XP Pro using 1.0.2 for years. His computer died and he had to get a Vista Home Premium system. 1.0.2 doesn't work well. 1.0.4 RC8 works better but I see no tray icon for the server or a menu item to allow me to configure the server defaults like password and other characteristics. I would like to reduce the colors to resolve the slow paint speed and remove the wallpaper but can find out where to change the configuration. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a number of times but still see no way to change the server defaults. What am i missing?
