Extended desktop over network?

Post by comporanger »

There are some commercial programs such as Maxivista, which allow you to extend your desktop to a laptop over a network. Would it be possible to tweak UltraVNC to give it this functionality?

I don't see why not. Seems like a pretty simple "trick" at first glance.

Some free alternatives are discussed at http://superuser.com/questions/129221/d ... opensource

Thanks for the link. One of those programs, Zone Screen - http://www.zoneos.com/zonescreen.htm, is the only free program I've found that is meant to connect two Windows PCs over a network, to simulate a dual-monitor setup. Everything else is meant to be used with a Mac, or an Ipad, or to share your mouse and keyboard between computers, such as Synergy - http://synergy-foss.org/.The problem is ZoneScreen has limited and experimental support for Windows 7 and I couldn't get it to work. This thread - http://forum.ultravnc.info/viewtopic.php?t=6408 contains some discussion on the subject, and evidently some folks have been able to use UltraVNC, together with a virtual VGA driver, to create the extended desktop over network I'm looking for. I would appreciate some more detailed instruction from anyone who has successfully done this, and it would be great if the next release of VNC could have this feature implemented.

Well, thanks to that thread it seems you're out of luck -- Rudi is still the main/only developer of UltraVNC, and he wrote in that old thread that he CAN'T add the feature, apparently due to a conflict of interest because he wrote the feature for MaxiVista. :(
The old virtual driver was used for a commercial application.

Because i worked on that app, i can't add this feature to UltraVNc.
I hopes you understad that...

So it seems like you're better off pursuing a kludge with another flavor of VNC (or finding someone else to modify UltraVNC for you).
