Lost, Noob needs help.

Post by gottria »

OK, I trying to understand what PcHelpWare is used for. I'm a field tech and I need to connect to remote computers for trouble shooting. I'm using Logmein right now but my trial is over in 5 days and need to find an alternate. With Logmein I have 5 PCs setup and connecting to them is easy. I hit a WiFi access point and log into my Logmein account and I'm able to control the customers server.

I'm assumning PcHelpWare is similar? 4-5 of the customers use SBC/Yahoo DSL and have dynamic IPS as I would aslo as I'm connecting through a public WiFi connection. I guess I would have to use a repeater? I can host my own repeater as I have an FTP server setup at home and I use DynDNS.com to connect to it.

Am I on the right path to replacing Logmein?

Thanks Greg

Well, I did make some progress, but I think I understand it wrong. When I use the viewer it asks me Alias, Password and so forth, does that install on the customers end or on my laptop? When I input all the fields and hit create server and it creates a small .exe file, I assume that resides on my laptop and when I need to connect to a customers PC I launch that file and it should connect. Man am I screwed up on this one...

What if my customers all have dynamic IP addresses, I know I have to fun dynalias?

PcHelpWare is a remote viewing / support tool where there is someone at the other end able to initiate the connection.
Since you are talking about servers I'm assuming that no one will be stood in front of it as often I carry our administration on clients servers without them even being aware of the fact.
If this is the case then perhaps utilising either Microsoft remote desktop or Ultr@VNC would be a better solution for you as these are both capable of having the connection initiated remotely as you seem to be doing currently.
Provided that is, that you will be administrating a microsoft platform.

With regards to the fact that our customers may be on dynamic IP's a DynDNS type service could be employed to ensure you can alwas connect to them.

Thanks Arc, It will be initated on my end, not the customers. I do light maintenance at night when they aren't at work. I'll look into Ultr@VNC insted.
